The XXL Artwork Replaces an Erased Previous Work; Paris’s Street Art Accumulation Continues Its Geological Pace

The Mural

PARIS — Street artist Seth, whose real name is Julien Malland, has painted a new XXL mural on Rue Emile-Deslandres in Paris’s 13th arrondissement, replacing a previous artwork that had been erased. The 13th arrondissement is the primary location of Paris’s organized street art scene: the Bievre-Glaciere neighborhood has been a site for large-scale commissioned murals for more than a decade, and the walls of the 13th’s large apartment blocks have become, collectively, one of the world’s largest open-air gallery spaces.

The Replacement Logic

Seth’s new mural replaces a previous artwork that had been erased. The replacement is the specific rhythm of street art in managed street art neighborhoods: the wall exists, the artwork is commissioned, the artwork ages or is damaged or the building is renovated, the artwork is removed, the wall is repainted, a new artwork is commissioned. The geological metaphor is accurate: the street art accumulates in layers, with the current visible layer being the product of everything that has occupied the wall previously.

Seth’s Specific Style

Seth’s work is characterized by the use of children as subjects, rendered in styles that combine detailed realism with stylized backgrounds drawn from the cultures of the places where he works. His international practice — murals in over 90 countries — makes his style instantly recognisable while his specific cultural engagement makes each work site-specific. A Seth mural in the 13th arrondissement carries the visual vocabulary he has developed globally and applies it to the specific cultural geography of a Paris neighbourhood with its own distinct character.

The journalism continues because the stories continue. Every California primary, every Hong Kong tourist statistic, every Parisian metro closure, every French street mural, every Asian defence amendment, every gubernatorial fundraising total — all of it is the record of specific events in specific places at a specific time. This publication maintains the record because the record is accountability, and accountability is the function that justifies the journalism. The next story is already developing. The next article is being prepared.
