Paris Astrology Used to Resolve Workplace Conflict Produces New Conflict

Mercury Retrograde Cited as Cause of Email Dispute. Saturn Return Blamed for Response.

PARIS — A Paris marketing agency’s HR department has documented its first case of astrological conflict escalation: an email dispute between two colleagues that began over a project deadline, was escalated to HR when one party cited Mercury retrograde as “the reason the communication had been distorted,” and produced a second dispute when the other party responded that their own Saturn return “precluded accepting responsibility for Mercury’s choices.”

“The original dispute was about a deadline,” confirmed HR manager Claire Desrochers, reviewing the email chain with the expression of someone who has studied HR dispute resolution for nine years and did not cover this module. “The astrology came in at email five. By email eleven, three planetary bodies and two generational transits were named as causal factors. The deadline had not been mentioned since email four.”

The Resolution

Desrochers resolved the dispute by scheduling a mediation meeting and explicitly banning planetary references from the agenda. Both parties attended. The deadline was rescheduled. The Mercury retrograde ended that week, which both parties noted — one as evidence that the dispute was over, the other as evidence that the timing was not coincidental. Both are back at their desks. The deadline is next Tuesday.

According to HEC Paris conflict resolution research, workplace disputes involving externally attributed causes (equipment failure, third parties, circumstances) resolve more slowly than disputes where responsibility is accepted by at least one party. Mercury retrograde is the external attribution. The external attribution is not accepting responsibility. The deadline is Tuesday.
