Emojiology Study Identifies ‘Grandparent Dialect’ with Distinct Rules and Rare Combinations

PARIS — A study of emoji usage patterns across French generational groups has identified what researchers at the Ecole Normale Superieure are calling “the grandparent dialect” — a distinctive emoji deployment pattern characterised by: multiple punctuation emojis used in sequence (the heart, the heart, the heart), context-independent deployment (a thumbs-up to a message reporting a bereavement), and what the researchers call “the emoji replacement sentence,” in which an entire response is communicated through five to eight emojis in a combination whose meaning requires relationship-specific interpretation.

“My grandmother responded to a message about my new job with the sunflower, the clapping hands, the number 100, the star, and a croissant,” said one study participant. “I understood immediately. Someone without context would not.”

The Dialect Rules

The grandparent dialect’s rules, reconstructed by the researchers from 4,000 observed messages, include: hearts are deployed intensively as a general positive signal, the thumbs-up confirms reception rather than approval of content, and the croissant appears in approximately 34% of all grandparent emoji messages regardless of topic, functioning as what the research paper calls “a warm ambient Frenchness marker.” The croissant is the grandparent dialect’s definite article.

According to the Academie francaise’s digital language evolution research, emoji constitute a supplementary communication layer rather than a replacement for text, with meaning determined by social context. The grandparent dialect has its own social context. The context requires the relationship. The croissant requires nothing. The croissant is always there.
