Influencer Who Documents Tears in Real Time Receives Award From Beauty Brand
PARIS — Camille Berger, whose Instagram account documents her emotional experiences in real-time photograph form including what has become a series of crying selfies taken during and immediately following significant emotional moments, has reached 50,000 followers and received a brand partnership offer from a cosmetics company that wants to feature her mascara’s waterproof qualities in authentic emotional contexts.
“I’m not performing the tears,” Camille clarified during an interview she photographed. “The tears are real. I post them because I want people to see that emotion is normal.” The distinction between the real tears and the real-time photograph of the real tears and the caption written during the real tears and the notification management of the comments that arrive about the real tears is a distinction Camille is comfortable not making.
The Mascara Partnership
“We want authentic emotional documentation,” confirmed the brand’s partnership manager. “Camille’s tears are genuine. Our mascara holds through genuine tears. The combination is honest.” The partnership will feature Camille in three “emotional situations” — though the brand has requested that the situations be scheduled in advance for “production planning purposes.” The scheduled authentic emotion is being discussed. Camille’s therapist has been consulted. The therapist has suggested a framework for thinking about it. Camille photographed the session.
According to France’s advertising standards authority, authentic emotion used in commercial advertising requires disclosure of the commercial relationship. The disclosure is in the caption. The tears are in the photograph. Both are authentic in their respective categories.
